DOMUS NOSTRA
Domus Nostra is a new project space and residency programme in Rome (IT) launching in June 2025 and was born out of a desire to expand opportunities for early-career artists beyond the gallery setting, and from a need for a flexible space that can serve both as a home-away-from-home and an experimental studio where new ideas can be researched and tested.
Independent from the gallery programme, Domus Nostra will host, at irregular intervals throughout the year, a cohort of artists and curators who can benefit from the city’s rich cultural heritage, as well as a programme of events and exhibitions aimed at engaging with a local audience.
The apartment itself is a modest space—intentionally kept so to allow for agility, flexibility, and openness. It is designed to be adaptable, welcoming experimentation and change. Those invited to spend time at Domus Nostra are encouraged to use their time there as they as they wish and although not required to produce any finished work, we hope to hosts ‘open house’ events to allow for an exchange between the local audience and the international practitioners in residence.
The name Domus Nostra—from Latin Our Home—was chosen as a deliberate echo of the Domus Aurea, the grand palace built by Emperor Nero, located just across the park of Colle Oppio from the building that hosts the residency. While the reference nods to Rome’s layered architectural and cultural history, Domus Nostra reclaims the concept of the domus as a shared, communal space—modest rather than monumental, open rather than exclusive. It is a place where ideas can be exchanged freely and where hospitality, rather than hierarchy, defines the environment.
